LED Grid Wall — own a pixel in the Adom workcell
Public Made by Adomby adom
A 12,960-LED addressable wall for the Adom workcell: 9 identical 160x160mm tiles (1,440 Dialight 587-1024-147F 2020 LEDs each, RP2040 + USB-C per tile) on a LrgLrg 576x576 scaffold. Remote Adom users each own a pixel.

markdownLED Grid Wall — own a pixel in the Adom workcell
A wall of 12,960 individually addressable mini RGB LEDs on a LrgLrg (576×576 mm) workcell scaffold: 9 identical tiles in a 3×3 grid, each tile carrying 1,440 Dialight 587-1024-147F 2020-package LEDs at 4 mm pitch. Every LED can be owned by a remote Adom user who sets its color anytime; a live camera in the workcell watches the wall, so a design emerges as users coordinate with each other.
Architecture
- Tile (this build's one board design): 160 × 160 mm, 4-layer, 1,440 LEDs in a 40×36 grid. The bottom 16 mm strip carries the brains: an RP2040 (4 parallel PIO-driven WS2812 chains, ~90 fps full-tile refresh), USB-C to the workcell host, W25Q128 flash, 12 MHz crystal, AP2112K-3.3 3.3 V rail, and a 74AHCT125 level shifter for 5 V LED data. Power enters through Adom large machine contacts (5 V, firmware-capped at 20 A per tile).
- Scaffold: 3×3 tiles on the 576×576 LrgLrg scaffold; the LED fields of adjacent tiles align so the grid reads as one continuous canvas on camera. MCU strips form three thin horizontal bands.
- Firmware:
ledgrid_tile(Pico SDK, PIO + DMA, USB CDC bulk frames, global power cap, dead-host watchdog). Host reference:host/tile_host.pymaps (tile, row, col) → (chain, index). - Ownership app: remote users claim and color LEDs from the Adom cloud; the workcell host relays frames to tiles over USB. Simulation available while boards are at the fab.
The LED
Dialight 587-1024-147F (Mouser 645-587-1024-147F): a 2.0 × 2.0 mm addressable RGB LED, WS2812-protocol compatible (800 kbps single-wire NRZ, 24-bit GRB), no external capacitor required, 5 mA per channel. Chosen as the densest Mouser-stocked addressable LED — the Worldsemi WS2812B-2020 (Adom basic part) is the same density class but was out of stock everywhere at design time.
