Molecule contact names collapse to generic footprint values; symbol and marker contract need validation

John Lauer · 14d ago

Versions: step2glb CLI 0.13.2; conversion service 1.6.1; native KiCad 10.0.5; AIFlow 0.1.85. Linux CLI with STEP exported by KiCad on Windows. Reproduced 2026-10-10; prior working version unknown.

Converting the public electronic-load PCB with step2glb convert v85-mechanical.step --board adom-custom-electronic-load.kicad_pcb --pin medium -o v85-review.kicad.glb (job c4952b6dff8baeb1) successfully creates an anchored GLB, but the machine-contact names lose electrical meaning.

All seven contacts have name: "MachineContactMedium", with nameResolution.source: "value" and reason value field was non-empty and not a known placeholder. Four corner pins similarly share MachinePinMediumShort. The actual PCB and independently generated netlist agree: J1=DUT_POS, J2=GND, J3=5V_AUX, J4=GND, J5=UART_TX, J6=UART_RX, J7=GND; MP1–MP4=GND. A workcell needs unique connection IDs and functional net names. Expected: preserve reference/pin identity plus net name; do not treat generic mechanical footprint values as electrical labels.

The emitted symbol also has symbolName: "board", originalFilename: "board.kicad_pcb", and simplified placeholder elements containing notes rather than an obviously complete native symbol representation. Please clarify/validate its import/widget contract instead of silently treating JSON generation as usable-symbol proof.

A related anchoring-contract mismatch: stats say molecule_anchored: true, pin_size: "medium", pin_size_source: "param". The STEP contains MachinePinMediumShort and MP1 assemblies, and the AIFlow molecule skill currently requires pin_size_source: "markers". The skill's own command passes --pin medium. Please distinguish a valid explicit override from failed marker-size detection and provide a consistent gate.

Attached raw converter JSON and a reproducible PCB/netlist identity + coordinate audit. Local named derivatives leave raw outputs intact; registration is explicitly unvalidated. This report does not assert that the simplified symbols fail import, only that the generated metadata has ambiguous contact names and the usable-symbol contract is not proven. The prototype cooling assembly is absent from the pictured model; no fabrication or thermal qualification is claimed.
