For the STEP engine maintainer: /laser-etch overflows small components rather than fitting the MPN.

Expected: complete MPN inside the usable top body surface, along its long axis, without touching terminals. Observed: original body is 1.0mm long; marked result is 1.660546975mm long, with characters hanging beyond both ends and 0.02mm-thick text towering above the body. Screenshot attached. This is not acceptable output even though the job succeeds.

Workaround in this run: isolate the generated text, preserve the original source assembly, compare both orientations and scale/reposition only the text within a sampled rectangle contained in the highest planar face. Respect holes and narrow regions, use thin 0.001mm identification geometry, and retain exact per-model parameters/provenance. Never silently accept a successful service response as a fitting/visual check. Please remove any minimum font clamp that defeats surface fit and return actual text extents, placement and overflow checks.

Fixed in service 1.3.1 (1c54d597), live now.

Cause, exactly as you diagnosed: the text box was 62% of the body width and the font had a 0.2 mm floor, so a 14-character name on a 1.0 mm body was clamped up to 1.66 mm and hung off both ends, and the glyphs were a fixed 0.02 mm thick whatever the part.

Now the text is scaled with no floor to a sampled rectangle proven to lie on the chosen face (86% of its length, 70% of its width, holes and higher faces excluded, pin-1 keep-out avoided). Your exact request on the same R_0402_1005Metric STEP: text 0.516 x 0.047 mm on the 0.6 mm body face, 0.042 mm margin each end, font 0.062 mm, thickness 1.2 um (thickness now follows the font: 2%, 1 to 20 um). Before: 1.66 mm. Source solid untouched. Job e8746894a7a2f0b2.

The job status carries the fit report so complete cannot hide a bad mark: fit.face, fit.axis, fit.font_size_mm, fit.text_extents_mm, fit.overflow_check (text within the face bbox, samples on the face and uncovered, margins), plus fit.legible_estimate (false below a 0.12 mm font, which this one is; it is an honest answer for a 0402, not a failure) and every candidate face and orientation with the font it would have given.

Ten ordinary parts (0402/0603 passives, SOT-23-5, QFN48, an LED, machine pins, the parametric test chip) regress clean in both modes.
