markdownRed SMD LED 0402 - Inolux IN-S42ATR
Inolux Corporation IN-S42ATR: 0402 SMD Red LED, 2.1 V drop, 25 mA max. An Adom Basic Part: Adom keeps it on reels for its pick-and-place line, so boards built with it draw on Adom stock.

Notes for designers
IN-S42ATR is the red member of Inolux's IN-S42AT series: a low-profile 0402 top-view indicator LED in a clear, PCB-type moulded package (p.1). Electrically it is an unremarkable AlInGaP red emitter, which is the point, it is the part you reach for when a board needs a power or status light and nothing about the light itself should be interesting.
Budget 2.1 V across it at the 20 mA test point and it returns 90 mcd (p.3). Drive it through
a current-limiting resistor rather than straight off a rail, the datasheet says so
explicitly (p.12), and keep continuous current at or below 25 mA (p.2). At 3.3 V that is a
(3.3 − 2.1) / 0.02 = 60 Ω resistor for the full 20 mA, and most indicators are happier an
order of magnitude dimmer than that.
Two limits are worth remembering because they are tighter than instinct suggests. The 130° viewing angle (p.3) makes this a wide-angle panel indicator, not a directional light source. And reverse voltage is rated to only 5 V (p.2), well under a 12 V rail, so it must never be left reverse-biased across one.
Footprint
Arav's land pattern already matches the datasheet (within 0.02 mm), so the pads are unchanged; only the corners follow the rule below.
Source: Land pattern from Inolux IN-S42AT series datasheet, p.1 (Recommended Solder Pattern).
| mm | Datasheet | KiCad standard (LED_0402_1005Metric) | Previous | This page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pad length (along the part) | 0.4 | 0.59 | 0.4 | 0.4 |
| Pad width | 0.6 | 0.64 | 0.6 | 0.6 |
| Gap between pads | 0.6 | 0.38 | 0.6 | 0.6 |
| Centre to centre | 1 | 0.97 | 1 | 1 |
| Overall | 1.4 | 1.56 | 1.4 | 1.4 |
| Corner radius | not specified | 0.1475 (ratio 0.25) | 0.1 (ratio 0.25) | square (as drawn) |
| Corners: square, as the datasheet draws them. The datasheet does not call for rounded corners, so the footprint does not add any. |
Polarity: pad 1 = K (cathode, -X), pad 2 = A, matching the symbol (K = pin 1, A = pin 2) and the datasheet's cathode mark; the silkscreen bracket marks the cathode end.
Chip outline
The part's 3D outline in the standard pose (pad 1 toward the viewer), drawn from the STEP by Adom's OpenCascade service; the part number sits where the laser-etched mark is on the 3D model and reads the same way.
Symbol options
The default symbol, IN-S42ATR.kicad_sym (the one in the Symbol & Footprint panel), is the plain standard symbol. IN-S42ATR-outline.kicad_sym is the same symbol with the part's 3D chip outline drawn beside it, its part number placed and reading as on the 3D model.
