INA240

Texas Instruments · Bidirectional current-sense amplifier · SOIC-8

A high- and low-side, bidirectional current-sense amplifier in SOIC-8, built for measuring motor and solenoid currents. It reads the small voltage across a shunt resistor whose common-mode can sit anywhere from -4 V to +80 V, independent of its own supply, so it works on the high side of a battery rail or across a low-side shunt. Its standout feature is enhanced PWM rejection: it rejects the large common-mode steps that switching motor drives produce, giving a clean current signal where an ordinary op-amp shunt monitor would ring. A REF input centers the output for bidirectional (charge/discharge, forward/reverse) sensing. Fixed gains of 20 to 200 V/V are offered by variant. Runs 2.7-5.5 V.

Pinout

Pin Name Type Function
1 NC unconnected No internal connection. Reserved - connect to ground or leave floating.
2 IN+ input Non-inverting differential analog input. Connect to the supply (high) side of the shunt resistor. Common-mode range −4 V to +80 V independent of VS.
3 IN- input Inverting differential analog input. Connect to the load side of the shunt resistor. Shares the −4 V to +80 V common-mode range with IN+.
4 GND power_in Analog ground / device ground return.
5 VS power_in Positive supply, 2.7 V to 5.5 V. Bypass to GND with a 0.1 µF ceramic close to the pin. Quiescent current 1.8 mA typ, 2.4 mA max.
6 REF2 input Reference-2 input for setting the output midpoint. Valid input range 0 V to VS. Tie to VS or to a second reference to configure unidirectional or bidirectional output midpoint.
7 REF1 input Reference-1 input for setting the output midpoint. Valid input range 0 V to VS. Combined with REF2 to form the output offset per the Adjusting the Output Midpoint With the Reference Pins section.
8 OUT output Buffered analog output voltage, VOUT = Gain × VSENSE + VREF, where Gain is 20/50/100/200 V/V for A1/A2/A3/A4. Swings from GND+10 mV to VS−0.2 V into 10 kΩ.
