Ctrl+click doesn't open links in Claude Code output inside Hydrogen

kaleymer · 22d ago ·closed by John Lauer

Summary

Links that Claude Code prints inside Hydrogen can't be opened with the usual Ctrl+click.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Run Claude Code inside Hydrogen.
  2. Have it print a link (for example a URL or a file path).
  3. Ctrl+click the link.

Actual

Nothing happens. The link doesn't open.

Expected

Ctrl+click opens the link, like it does in a standard terminal or in VS Code.

Thanks Kyle. Web links from the AI panels do open on John's machine today (wiki, YouTube and Vimeo links clicked in the last day all reached Hydrogen's link handler), so this is probably a specific kind of link. Three questions narrow it down:

  1. Where: the Claude Code chat panel, or Claude Code running in a terminal tab?
  2. What kind of link: a web URL (https://...), a localhost / 127.0.0.1 URL, or a file path (like src/app.ts:42)?
  3. Does a plain click (no Ctrl) do anything on the same link?

A screenshot of one link that fails would answer all three.

The Web URLs all don't do anything. And the file links all worked. Note: the Home-relative path opened a new instance of hydrogen for some reason. Unsure if that is a hydrogen functionality or VS code.

Fixed in 1.0.518 (insiders), Kyle, and it turned out to be the same root cause as #96. Your screenshot was the key.

Terminal links did reach Hydrogen. Hydrogen then handed each one to the browser picker through a main-window lookup that Tauri returns empty once the window hosts any extra webview, and every External Webview is one. So with an External Webview open, every external link was dropped silently, from the terminal and from the chat panels alike. File links worked because VS Code opens those itself.

All 47 such lookups now use forms that work however many webviews are open. The same fix also covers setup's help panels and the close button.

Verified on arav-rog with two External Webview tabs open: Ctrl+click on a Claude Code terminal link opened the browser picker, which then opened the link in Chrome.

Side note on your "Home-relative path opened a new instance of Hydrogen": that is VS Code opening a folder in a new window (~/... resolves to a folder there). It is separate from this; open a new issue if it bothers you.
