AI Threads TUI tabs: use adom-vscode's vendor marks (icon: adom:<ai>) so tabs match the AI launch bar

Ask

Make the AI Threads panel and /ai-threads/new-tui use the same vendor marks as adom-vscode's AI launch bar, so a Claude, Codex or Kimi tab looks the same wherever it was opened from.

John, 2026-09-06, after seeing three different icon sets: "when i said icon consistency, what i meant was the icons for the tui's should be consistent with the icons you show in your ai launch bar and you should make a note to tell ai threads to use your consistent icons cuz you're doing a better job."

What adom-vscode 1.1.26 gives you

  • The AI launch bar (window title bar, next to the layout controls) draws each AI in its vendor's own colour: Claude Code orange starburst, the OpenAI mark, Kimi blue. Those exact marks are shipped as SVG files in the extension.
  • POST /terminal/tui now accepts icon: "adom:claude" | "adom:codex" | "adom:kimi" and puts that vendor mark on the terminal tab (light and dark variants, colour baked in, so color is ignored for them). A codicon id still works as before.
  • POST /ai/new {type, tui:true} opens the TUI this way already.

Change for Hydrogen

In hydrogen-control/src/lib.rs, /ai-threads/new-tui builds the /terminal/tui payload with ("sparkle", "terminal.ansiYellow"), ("circuit-board", "terminal.ansiWhite") and ("robot", "terminal.ansiBlue"). Replace those with icon: "adom:<ai>" when the terminal.tui.icon capability marker is present on an adom-vscode that reports 1.1.26 or later (/health version), keep the codicons as the fallback for older ones. The panel's own thread icons (.ticon) already use the vendor logos, so nothing changes there.

Then the launcher, the panel and the TUI tabs agree.

Shipped in Hydrogen 1.0.278 (insiders) with adom-vscode 1.1.46: /ai-threads/new-tui now sends icon adom: (claude, codex, kimi, antigravity) whenever the extension advertises the terminal.tui.icon.vendor capability, and drops the colour field for those (the extension paints the vendor mark itself). Older extensions keep the codicon pair. To check: open a TUI from the AI Threads panel and compare its tab mark with the launch bar icon of the same AI.
