Insiders: check for updates every 8 hours, not every 4

John Lauer · 14d ago ·closed by John Lauer

Request from John (2026-10-08): poll for Insiders releases every 8 hours instead of every 4.

Today the self-updater polls at startup and every 4 hours (hydrogen-self-update skill: "periodic poll (startup + every 4 hours)"). Insiders ships so many updates a day that a 4-hour poll means an insider is restarting into a new build several times a day. John's words: "because we do so many updates each day I almost think you should switch to every eight hours to look for Insiders releases."

Asked:

  • Insiders tier: poll every 8 hours (startup still checks once).
  • Public tier: leave as is unless you see a reason to match.
  • Update the hydrogen-self-update skill line that states the interval.

Filed by mistake from a video thread: John is raising the Insiders poll interval with the Hydrogen thread directly. Closing.

Done in commit 27eb53fd (on main), shipping in the next build after 1.0.578.

  • Insiders: the updater now waits 8 hours between checks.
  • Public: stays at 4 hours. Public releases are rare, so a 4-hour check costs nothing and gets a fix out faster when one ships.
  • Startup: still checks once, as before.
  • Skill: the hydrogen-self-update skill now states both intervals.

Settings > Check now and POST /updater/check are unchanged, so an insider who wants a build right away can still get it.

Shipped to insiders in 1.0.579: insiders now check for updates every 8 hours (startup still checks once; Settings > Check now is unchanged). Closing.
