STEP export silently omits project-local custom 3D models

Ray · 1mo ago

The STEP export CLI uploads only a .kicad_pcb and reports success while omitting all project-local 3D models.

Reproduction: a tscircuit-generated five-pin logic molecule board has 11 placed models and four unique custom STEP files. All references resolve locally via ${KIPRJMOD}/3dmodels/index.3dshapes/. Run service-kicad pcb export step index.kicad_pcb --out molecule.step. Exit 0, output 131,687 bytes, but its only PRODUCT records are the top assembly and PCB. The machine pins, machine contacts, IC and bypass capacitor are absent.

With the complete project copied into a task-specific temporary directory on the KiCad service host, native KiCad 10.0.2 pcb export step ... --subst-models --include-silkscreen --include-pads produces a 1.23 MB STEP containing all custom component PRODUCT records. This is the temporary workaround used here; no service configuration was changed.

Requested: add a CLI project-bundle option that uploads referenced custom models and rewrites them into the job directory, or refuse incomplete exports with explicit unresolved model paths. An exit-0 bare-board export is unsafe as the input to the molecule publishing pipeline. Keep task files scoped to the job lifecycle.

No implementation or PR is in progress. Repro board and bundled models will be on adom/molecule-74lvc1g00gw-125; the existing family review is https://wiki.adom.inc/adom/logic-gate-molecule-family .
