Desktop CLI shim omits child schematics and silently exports an empty netlist

John Lauer · 13d ago

The installed desktop fallback kicad-cli shim transfers the argument schematic and same-stem project siblings, but not referenced child sheets. A hierarchical netlist export returned exit0 with <components/> and <nets/>, even though the actual project has104components. Root sheet contains only hierarchical sheet references, so the missing children make this especially easy to mistake for a clean export.

Reproduction: KICAD_CLI_TARGET=AdomLapper KICAD_CLI_THREAD=adom-custom-load kicad-cli sch export netlist --format kicadxml --output native-netlist.xml adom-custom-electronic-load.kicad_sch from a directory containing the root and10child .kicad_sch files. Native KiCad10.0.5. The input loop only appends same-stem extensions; output transfer and cleanup complete normally. The attached empty export contains the child-sheet names but zero components.

Verified workaround: explicitly send all11hierarchical schematic files into a retained task-owned desktop review folder, run native CLI with structured arguments, then pull the XML. Result104components,273connected pin memberships and15explicit no-connect pins. Exact candidate board parity passes; no changes to net topology or export gates.

Please resolve referenced sheet paths recursively, preserve relative directories and project context, detect missing dependencies before running, and validate export completeness. Do not blindly accept an empty export from a nonempty design. Tests should cover nested subfolders, repeated-sheet instances, missing children, spaces in filenames and a legitimately empty root. Preserve failed jobs rather than deleting their diagnostics. No installed shim or shared service was replaced here.
