L293D

Texas Instruments · Quad half-H driver (dual H-bridge) · PDIP-16

Four half-H drivers in one DIP-16, the classic way to spin small DC and bipolar stepper motors from a microcontroller. The four channels pair into two full H-bridges, each pair gated by an enable (1,2EN and 3,4EN), so it runs two DC motors bidirectionally or one bipolar stepper. Unlike the plain L293, the D version has the flyback clamp diodes built in, so inductive loads like relays, solenoids, and motors need no external diodes. It sources up to 600 mA per channel (1.2 A peak) with a separate motor supply (VCC2) up to 36 V and 5 V logic (VCC1). The four center GND pins double as a heat sink.

Pinout

Pin Name Type Function
1 1,2EN input Active-high enable for driver channels 1 and 2. When high, drivers 1 and 2 are enabled and outputs track their inputs; when low, outputs 1Y and 2Y are in high-impedance (off). TTL compatible, tolerant up to 7 V.
2 1A input Noninverting driver input for channel 1. TTL-compatible logic input; VIH ≥ 2.3 V, VIL ≤ 1.5 V. Controls state of output 1Y when 1,2EN is high.
3 1Y output Half-H driver output for channel 1. Totem-pole output with Darlington sink and pseudo-Darlington source, supplies up to 600 mA continuous / 1.2 A peak at VCC2 (4.5 V to 36 V). Internal output clamp diodes provide inductive-transient suppression on L293D.
4 GND power_in Device ground and heat-sink pin. Connect to PCB ground plane with multiple solid vias; pins 4, 5, 12, and 13 are all tied to the internal heat-sink lead frame and share thermal duty.
5 GND power_in Device ground and heat-sink pin. Connect to PCB ground plane with multiple solid vias; pins 4, 5, 12, and 13 are all tied to the internal heat-sink lead frame and share thermal duty.
6 2Y output Half-H driver output for channel 2. Totem-pole output with Darlington sink and pseudo-Darlington source, supplies up to 600 mA continuous / 1.2 A peak at VCC2 (4.5 V to 36 V). Internal output clamp diodes provide inductive-transient suppression on L293D.
7 2A input Noninverting driver input for channel 2. TTL-compatible logic input; VIH ≥ 2.3 V, VIL ≤ 1.5 V. Controls state of output 2Y when 1,2EN is high.
8 VCC2 power_in Output-stage (driver) supply, 4.5 V to 36 V. Sets the swing of all four Y outputs and supplies motor/load current up to 600 mA continuous per channel (1.2 A peak) on L293D. Bypass locally to GND with bulk + ceramic capacitors.
9 3,4EN input Active-high enable for driver channels 3 and 4. When high, drivers 3 and 4 are enabled and outputs track their inputs; when low, outputs 3Y and 4Y are in high-impedance (off). TTL compatible, tolerant up to 7 V.
10 3A input Noninverting driver input for channel 3. TTL-compatible logic input; VIH ≥ 2.3 V, VIL ≤ 1.5 V. Controls state of output 3Y when 3,4EN is high.
11 3Y output Half-H driver output for channel 3. Totem-pole output with Darlington sink and pseudo-Darlington source, supplies up to 600 mA continuous / 1.2 A peak at VCC2 (4.5 V to 36 V). Internal output clamp diodes provide inductive-transient suppression on L293D.
12 GND power_in Device ground and heat-sink pin. Connect to PCB ground plane with multiple solid vias; pins 4, 5, 12, and 13 are all tied to the internal heat-sink lead frame and share thermal duty.
13 GND power_in Device ground and heat-sink pin. Connect to PCB ground plane with multiple solid vias; pins 4, 5, 12, and 13 are all tied to the internal heat-sink lead frame and share thermal duty.
14 4Y output Half-H driver output for channel 4. Totem-pole output with Darlington sink and pseudo-Darlington source, supplies up to 600 mA continuous / 1.2 A peak at VCC2 (4.5 V to 36 V). Internal output clamp diodes provide inductive-transient suppression on L293D.
15 4A input Noninverting driver input for channel 4. TTL-compatible logic input; VIH ≥ 2.3 V, VIL ≤ 1.5 V. Controls state of output 4Y when 3,4EN is high.
16 VCC1 power_in Logic supply for internal input translation, 4.5 V to 7 V (nominal 5 V). Kept separate from VCC2 to minimize device power dissipation. Bypass locally to GND with a ceramic capacitor.
