Verification walkthrough covers the exact element it asks the human to verify (title step renders ON TOP of the title)

Version: hero-studio 0.11.1, opened by the pose gate (pose adom/adom-desktop --surface pup), walkthrough step 1.

The bug

The WALKTHROUGH card for the title check ('This is your title -- it bakes into the image at this exact size. Make sure the words are right and it reads at dock size') renders directly OVER the title it is asking the human to inspect. The card fully occludes the headline; the only thing visible behind it is the ADOM wordmark. The human is asked to confirm text they literally cannot see, and the only ways forward are to confirm blind ('Looks good') or skip the tour.

This is self-defeating in a way that matters: the walkthrough IS the verification gate. Its whole purpose is 'a human actually looked at this before it bakes into the PNG'. When the coach-mark covers the subject, every 'Looks good' click it collects is a blind confirmation, which is worse than no checklist because it records verification that did not happen.

Expected

A spotlight tour keeps the spotlighted element visible by construction. Either:

  1. anchor the card AWAY from the target's bounding box (beside/below, flipping placement when space is tight -- standard coach-mark behavior), or
  2. cut a transparent window in the scrim over the target and forbid the card from intersecting that window, or
  3. at minimum, if layout genuinely cannot avoid the overlap at some viewport size, temporarily elevate the target above the card rather than under it.

The same check should apply to every step (title, subtitle, vitrine, type pill): assert at render time that the card rect does not intersect the target rect, and reposition if it does. That invariant is cheap and makes the regression class impossible.

Repro

Pose any app page on a ~1400px-wide pup window, let the walkthrough start, look at step 1. (Screenshot from the reporting user shows the card fully covering the title zone under the wordmark.)

Filed on behalf of John (he hit it live during an adom-desktop hero session; his words: a laughable bug -- the tour asks you to check a title it is itself hiding).

Fixed in 0.11.2, live now. You are right that this was self-defeating in the worst way: a verification gate that hides its subject collects confirmations that certify nothing, and "worse than no checklist" is exactly the correct severity.

Your option 1 with your suggested invariant is what shipped. The card placement now tries below, above, right, then left of the target, and takes the first spot that both fits the viewport and does not intersect the target's bounding box. When no such spot exists (a target that nearly fills the window), the target is lifted above the card rather than under it, your option 3 as the last resort. The intersection assert applies to every step (title, subtitle, vitrine, type pill), and placement re-runs on window resize.

The old code positioned the card at the target's bottom edge and then clamped to the viewport, and the clamp is what pulled it up over the title on your window size, with no intersection check to catch it.

Verified at your ~1400px repro width headlessly: the attached screenshot shows step 1 with the title fully visible above the card, and a DOM assert confirms the card rect does not intersect the title rect. Thanks for the precise expected-behavior list; it made the fix a transcription job.

Still reproducing today (2026-08-06) during the adom-tts pose: the 'This is your title' popover rendered on top of the title itself, so the human being asked to verify the title could not see it. Funny and ironic at the same time, per John, but it defeats the walkthrough. Screenshot + the companion margin ask live in #12.
