Font licensing for the Adom theme system

Three brand faces, three different situations. Read this before copying font files anywhere.

Face Role License On this page? Why
JetBrains Mono Code SIL Open Font License 1.1 Yes (fonts/jetbrains-mono/, 4 faces + OFL.txt) OFL permits redistribution when the license text accompanies the files
Familjen Grotesk Headlines, Kickstand prose SIL Open Font License 1.1 Yes (fonts/familjen-grotesk/, variable face + OFL.txt) Same OFL terms
Satoshi Prose (the main body face) Fontshare Free Font EULA (Indian Type Foundry) No binaries, deliberately The FFL forbids hosting the files publicly (see below). satoshi/README.md says where to get it, and install.sh fetches it from Fontshare automatically

The OFL pair (JetBrains Mono, Familjen Grotesk)

The SIL OFL 1.1 allows the fonts to be "used, studied, modified and redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves", with the requirement that the copyright and license notices travel with the files. That is why each font directory here carries its OFL.txt verbatim. If you copy the woff2 files into another repo or image, copy the OFL.txt beside them. Do not rename the families (OFL reserves the font names).

Satoshi: free to use, not free to re-host

Satoshi is licensed under the Fontshare Free Font EULA (Indian Type Foundry, last updated 2021-03-22, the License/FFL.txt inside the official download). The grant is generous: free personal and commercial use "in any media (including Print, Web, Mobile, Digital, Apps, ePub, Broadcasting and OEM)". But the limitations clause is explicit:

"The Fonts may not - beyond the permitted copies and the uses defined herein - be distributed, duplicated, loaned, resold or licensed in any way ... This includes the distribution of the Fonts by e-mail, on USB sticks, CD-ROMs, or other media, uploading them in a public server or making the fonts available on peer-to-peer networks."

This wiki page is a public server, so Satoshi's files must never be committed here. What to do instead, per surface:

  • Getting Satoshi for a machine or image: download it from fontshare.com/fonts/satoshi (direct ZIP: api.fontshare.com/v2/fonts/download/satoshi), or serve it via Fontshare's API. The EULA explicitly contemplates API delivery from ITF's own servers.
  • Hydrogen Desktop vendors Satoshi inside its private repo and ships it within the product (the "Apps / OEM" use the grant names). That copy is internal distribution inside a licensed product, not public hosting. Do not copy HD's Satoshi files into any public location, including this page, a public GitHub repo, or a CDN directory listing.
  • Fallback behavior: every prose stack in the theme system lists Satoshi first with system fallbacks (-apple-system, 'Segoe UI', sans-serif), so a machine without Satoshi degrades gracefully rather than breaking.

If Adom ever needs to re-host Satoshi publicly (for example a first-party CDN serving arbitrary sites), that requires written consent from Indian Type Foundry, per the EULA. Until then: fetch from Fontshare, ship only inside products.
