adom-symbol-creator MCP is dead: AV retirement deleted its backend deps

Every adom-symbol-creator MCP tool (sym_create, sym_lint, sym_validate, sym_preview, ...) returns "fetch failed" and has been broken since the Adom Viewer was retired. Filing here because adom-symbol is the working successor and the fix is to route through it.

Root cause

The MCP is a thin wrapper (~/gallia/symbol-creator/mcp/tools.js) that proxies every call to a local HTTP backend at http://127.0.0.1:8781 (~/gallia/symbol-creator/server.js). That backend never starts:

$ node ~/gallia/symbol-creator/server.js
Error [ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND]: Cannot find module '/home/adom/gallia/viewer/kicad-api-client.js'
  imported from /home/adom/gallia/symbol-creator/server.js

server.js still imports three modules from the retired viewer dir:

import { symExportSvg, symSearch } from '../viewer/kicad-api-client.js';
import { lintKicadSymbol }          from '../viewer/kicad-lint.js';
import { validateSymbolFolder }     from '../viewer/kicad-validate.js';

But commit d9403ff "Retire Adom Viewer (AV), container-conduit, and desktop-conduit residue" deleted the whole gallia/viewer/ directory, including kicad-api-client.js, kicad-lint.js, and kicad-validate.js. So the service crashes on boot, nothing binds :8781, and the MCP's fetch() to the backend fails. The MCP stdio process itself runs fine; only its backend is gone. This is not transient: retiring AV silently broke symbol-creator because nobody dropped its viewer dependency.

Impact

Any agent that reaches for the symbol-creator MCP (e.g. to author a KiCad symbol for a part KiCad's libs lack, while building a component wiki page) gets a hard failure with no fallback.

The standalone adom-symbol Rust CLI already replaces this service and works (create, render-ds2sf, preview, embed, serve). So:

  1. Preferred: retire / deregister the adom-symbol-creator MCP, or repoint gallia/symbol-creator/server.js to shell out to adom-symbol instead of the deleted ../viewer/* modules.
  2. Do not resurrect the AV-era viewer modules; they were removed on purpose.

Evidence

  • server.js:27-29 imports ../viewer/{kicad-api-client,kicad-lint,kicad-validate}.js
  • ls ~/gallia/viewer/ -> directory does not exist
  • git show --stat d9403ff lists viewer/kicad-api-client.js, viewer/kicad-lint.js, viewer/kicad-validate.js as deletions
  • nothing listening on :8781

Confirmed from this container: ~/gallia/viewer/ is gone and nothing binds :8781 from the old Node service. The adom-symbol-creator MCP and the gallia/symbol-creator/server.js backend are dead and will not be resurrected.

The replacement is the standalone Rust CLI, adom-symbol (adom-wiki pkg install adom/adom-symbol), now at 1.1.9:

  • adom-symbol create --file pins.json --out <dir> replaces sym_create (same JSON body: symbolName, pins[], preferences.pinLayout, preferences.chipNameCentered).
  • adom-symbol preview / adom-symbol serve replace sym_preview (the live viewer on port 8781 is this binary, not the Node service).
  • adom-symbol render, render-ds2sf, embed, and ui cover the rest.

Still to do on this issue, tracked here: the SKILL.md the agent loads still teaches the curl localhost:8781/sym/* API and the gallia/viewer/*.js imports. It needs a rewrite around the CLI commands above, and the adom-symbol-creator MCP entry should be deregistered. Leaving this open until that rewrite ships.
