Land pattern check: 0402ZD105KAT2A

The footprint on this page is KiCad's standard library footprint Capacitor_SMD:C_0402_1005Metric, renamed to C_0402_1005Metric_0402ZD105KAT2A so it can sit beside other parts in one library folder. The copper is unchanged. This page compares those pads with the land pattern recommended by KYOCERA (its MLCC application guide; the KYOCERA AVX sheets give none).

KiCad pads over the maker's land, true scale

Grey is the part body at its datasheet nominal size, teal is the KiCad copper, the dashed amber outline is the maker's land (middle of its printed range, or its printed nominal), and the amber bands show where the maker allows the inner and outer pad edges when it prints a range.

Numbers

Dimension KiCad footprint Maker's range Result
gap between lands 0.40 mm 0.40 to 0.60 mm inside
land length 0.56 mm 0.40 to 0.50 mm outside by +0.06 mm
land width 0.62 mm 0.50 to 0.75 mm inside
overall length (a + 2b, derived) 1.52 mm 1.20 to 1.60 mm inside

Maker's letters: a = gap between lands, b = land length, c = land width.

Result

The KiCad pads are larger than the maker's recommendation: land length by +0.06 mm. The gap between the pads is inside the range. KiCad's footprint is generated to IPC-7351 nominal density (its own description says so), not to this maker's table. A design that wants the maker's land should shrink the pads to the numbers in the table. KYOCERA AVX's X5R sheets give no land pattern; the comparison uses KYOCERA's MLCC application guide, whose 0402 row for 1.0 +/-0.20 mm parts (this body) is left blank, so the nearest printed row (1.0 +/-0.15 mm) is used.

KiCad pad centres are at +/-0.48 mm, pad size 0.56 x 0.62 mm, rounded rectangle (corner ratio 0.25). The numbers are in land-check.json; the drawing is made by provenance/tools/landcheck.py from the footprint file and the maker's table.
