Microchip Technology · Charge-pump voltage inverter · SOIC-8
A switched-capacitor (charge-pump) voltage converter in SOIC-8 that produces a negative supply from a positive one without any inductor: give it +5 V and two small capacitors and it delivers about -5 V, up to ~20 mA. That is the easy way to get the negative rail an op-amp or sensor needs in a single-supply board. It can also be configured to double a voltage. An internal oscillator runs the pump (an external cap or the OSC pin can retune it), and the LV pin optimizes operation at low supply voltages. It is pin-compatible with the ICL7660, whose KiCad symbol this page ships. Input 1.5-10 V.
Pinout
| Pin | Name | Type | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | NC | unconnected | No connection. Pin is not internally bonded and should be left floating or optionally tied to any convenient node. |
| 2 | CAP+ | passive | Charge pump capacitor positive terminal (flying capacitor +). Connects to the positive plate of the external charge pump 'flying' capacitor (typ. 10 uF) used to transfer charge from the input to the output. Low ESR capacitor recommended; larger values lower output resistance. |
| 3 | GND | power_in | Ground / zero-volt reference for both input and output. Common return for V+ supply current and the negative charge-pump output. |
| 4 | CAP- | passive | Charge pump capacitor negative terminal (flying capacitor -). Connects to the negative plate of the external flying capacitor. Proper orientation is imperative when using a polarized capacitor. |
| 5 | VOUT | power_out | Negative output voltage (nominal -V+). Connects to the negative terminal of the external output/reservoir capacitor (typ. 10 uF). Sources up to ~20 mA at V+=5V through an internal output resistance of ~70 Ohm typ. |
| 6 | LV | input | Low-voltage control input. Tie to GND for input supply voltages V+ below 3.5V to enable proper low-voltage operation of the internal oscillator. For V+ >= 3.5V, leave LV pin floating (open). |
| 7 | OSC | input | Oscillator control input. Internal RC oscillator runs at ~10 kHz with pin left open. Bypass to GND with an external capacitor to slow the oscillator (lower supply current, larger reservoir caps needed), or drive with an external clock to override. |
| 8 | V+ | power_in | Positive power supply input (+1.5V to +10V). LV pin tied to GND for V+ <= 3.5V; LV left open for V+ >= 3.5V. Bypass to GND with a low-ESR capacitor recommended. Typical supply current 80 uA at V+=5V. |
