CD4511B

Texas Instruments · BCD-to-7-segment decoder / driver · SOIC-16

A BCD-to-7-segment latch, decoder, and driver in one SOIC-16, the simplest way to put a digit on a common-cathode 7-segment LED display. Feed it a 4-bit BCD value (A-D) and it lights the right segments (a-g) with enough drive to run the LEDs directly, no series-transistor stage needed. A latch-enable pin freezes the displayed digit while the inputs change, a lamp-test input lights all segments to check the display, and a blanking input turns the digit off (useful for leading-zero suppression). Runs 3-18 V.

Pinout

Pin Name Type Function
1 B input BCD data input bit B (weight 2). CMOS-level input latched on rising edge of LE.
2 C input BCD data input bit C (weight 4). CMOS-level input latched on rising edge of LE.
3 LT input Lamp Test (active low). When LT = 0 (with BL = 1), all seven segment outputs a-g are forced high to illuminate every segment for display test regardless of BCD inputs.
4 BL input Blanking input (active low). When BL = 0 (with LT = 1), all seven segment outputs are forced low, blanking the display for intensity modulation/strobe applications.
5 LE/STROBE input Latch Enable / Strobe. When LE = 0, BCD input data flows through the latch transparently; on LE = 1 the currently-latched BCD code is held and decoded regardless of subsequent input changes.
6 D input BCD data input bit D (MSB, weight 8). CMOS-level input latched on rising edge of LE.
7 A input BCD data input bit A (LSB, weight 1). CMOS-level input latched on rising edge of LE.
8 VSS power_in Negative supply / ground reference (0 V). Common return for the BCD input latch, decoder logic, and segment driver emitters.
9 e output Seven-segment driver output for segment e. Active-high n-p-n bipolar sourcing output capable of driving up to 25 mA into a common-cathode LED segment.
10 d output Seven-segment driver output for segment d. Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
11 c output Seven-segment driver output for segment c. Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
12 b output Seven-segment driver output for segment b. Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
13 a output Seven-segment driver output for segment a. Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
14 g output Seven-segment driver output for segment g (center bar). Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
15 f output Seven-segment driver output for segment f. Active-high sourcing output (up to 25 mA) for common-cathode display drive.
16 VDD power_in Positive supply voltage. Operating range 3-18 V (absolute max VSS−0.5 V to +20 V). Decoupling with a 100 nF ceramic close to the pin is recommended.
