Charges a single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery and powers the system at the same time through a dynamic power-path stage, so the load runs off the input while the battery tops up, and the input current is shared to keep the source from browning out. Charge current is set by a resistor at ISET up to 1.5 A, with programmable termination and a safety timer, and a TS pin reads a battery thermistor for temperature-qualified charging. CHG and PGOOD outputs report status. A complete power-management front end for a rechargeable device.
Pinout
| Pin | Name | Type | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
TS | input | External NTC thermistor input. Connect to a 10-kΩ NTC in the battery pack to enable temperature-qualified charging. If TS is not used, tie a 10-kΩ fixed resistor from TS to VSS.
BAT | power_out | Charger power-stage output and battery voltage sense. Connect to the positive terminal of the 1-cell Li-Ion battery. Bypass BAT to VSS with a 4.7 µF to 47 µF ceramic capacitor. VBAT(REG) = 4.2 V typ. Continuous discharge/charge current rated to 4.5 A discharge, 1.5 A charging.
BAT | power_out | Second BAT connection - internally the same net as pin 2 for current handling. Tie to pin 2 and the battery positive terminal.
CE | input | Charge Enable, active-low. Drive high to disable battery charging (OUT and battery-supplement remain active); drive low to enable charging. Internally pulled DOWN to VSS via ~285 kΩ. Do not float.
EN2 | input | Input current-limit configuration input, bit 1. With EN1 selects USB100 (100 mA), USB500 (500 mA), external ILIM resistor, or standby (USB suspend). Internally pulled UP to ~285 kΩ. Do not float.
EN1 | input | Input current-limit configuration input, bit 0. Paired with EN2 to select USB100/USB500/ILIM-resistor/standby modes. Internally pulled UP to ~285 kΩ. Do not float.
PGOOD | output | Open-drain Power Good status output. Pulls to VSS when a valid input source is detected; high-impedance otherwise. Pull up to logic rail with 1 kΩ-100 kΩ, or drive an LED. Max sink 15 mA.
VSS | power_in | Ground return. Connect to the exposed thermal pad and to the ground rail of the circuit.
CHG | output | Open-drain charging status output. Pulls to VSS while the battery is charging; high-impedance when charge is complete or the charger is disabled. Pull up with 1 kΩ-100 kΩ, or drive an LED. Max sink 15 mA.
OUT | power_out | System supply output. Provides a regulated 4.4 V (VOUT(REG)) when the input is valid and above the DPPM threshold; connects to VBAT when the input is out of range. Bypass to VSS with a 4.7 µF to 47 µF ceramic capacitor.
OUT | power_out | Second OUT connection - internally the same net as pin 10 for current handling. Tie to pin 10 and to the system rail.
ILIM | input | Adjustable input current-limit programming pin. With EN2=1, EN1=0 the maximum input current is set by a 1100 Ω to 8 kΩ resistor from ILIM to VSS (up to 1.5 A). Leaving ILIM open disables all charging.
IN | power_in | Input power connection from AC adapter or USB port. Recommended operating range 4.35-10.2 V for BQ24074; withstands transients to 26 V without damage (operation suspended above OVP = 10.5 V). Bypass to VSS with 1 µF to 10 µF ceramic capacitor.
TMR | input | Safety timer programming pin. Connect an 18 kΩ to 72 kΩ resistor from TMR to VSS to program the pre-charge and fast-charge safety timers; tie TMR to VSS to disable all safety timers; leave open for default timings.
ITERM | input | Termination-current programming input (BQ24074 only). Connect a 0 to 15 kΩ resistor from ITERM to VSS to program the charge-termination current. Leave open for the default 10% termination threshold.
ISET | input | Fast-charge current programming input. Connect a 590 Ω to 8.9 kΩ resistor from ISET to VSS to set the fast-charge current (up to 1.5 A). The voltage on ISET mirrors the actual charge current for monitoring. Leaving ISET open disables charging.
Thermal Pad | passive | Exposed thermal pad on the package underside. Electrically connected internally to VSS and must be soldered to the same PCB potential as VSS. Do not use the thermal pad as the primary ground input; VSS pin (8) must still be tied to ground.
