Board STEP and hero carry an AI-etched MPN; the Samsung spec shows no marking (geometry passes the datasheet check)

John Lauer · 2d ago

Finding from a model-vs-datasheet check for the capacitive-encoder boards. John Lauer's rule for every board we make: each chip shows its real manufacturer laser marking in 3D, per the datasheet, on a datasheet-accurate model, and nothing else.

Geometry: passes. CL05A105KA5NQNC.step (sha256 03e44c4b...b312a2, the KiCad C_0402_1005Metric body) against the Samsung CL05A105KA5NQNC specification (reference sheet), p.1 "B. Structure & Dimension" (DigiKey copy, sha256 6b2c7387...a7adcbed): L 1.000 (1.00 +/-0.10), W 0.500 (0.50 +/-0.10), T 0.500 (0.50 +/-0.10), band width 0.200 top and bottom (BW 0.25 +/-0.10). Checked from orthographic top, bottom, side and end renders at 300 px/mm over a true-scale drawing of the printed table (Samsung's sketch is not to scale). Z-up, seated on z = 0, centred, long axis on X.

Marking: does not meet the rule. The Samsung specification specifies no marking for this part: none of its 36 pages has a marking section or mentions a part marking, and the p.1 sketch shows a plain body (0402 MLCCs are unmarked). The page's board-facing slots point at the AI-etched copy: component.parts.step = cl05a105ka5nqnc-mpn.step (an Adom.LaserEtch.MPN group, 17 glyph solids, on the top face), model_3d = cl05a105ka5nqnc-hero-footprint.glb (built from the marked model), and the hero is cl05a105ka5nqnc-mpn.png.

Suggested fix: point parts.step (and any model_3d_step) at the unmarked CL05A105KA5NQNC.step, rebuild the hero and the hero GLB from the unmarked body, and drop or archive the -mpn STEP/GLB/PNG and the overlay STEP. The capencoder project now uses the unmarked CL05A105KA5NQNC.step as lib/3d/CL05A105KA5NQNC.step. The overlay image and the check script are on the sibling pages (for example john/grm155r71c104ka88d, docs/verify/ and provenance/tools/overlay_chip.py) if you want to reproduce it.
