Changelog previews: show the commit subject line (or an optional --summary), not the whole message

Ray · 1h ago

Feature request: a short preview snippet for changelog entries.

Today: the commit message of a page edit (adom-wiki repo push -m) becomes the changelog verbatim, and update cards (e.g. "[updated] · 11 hours ago" on the page list) show the whole message. A bot-written message reads as a paragraph of internals in the preview. Example: repo-ownership's nightly refresh showed "ownership chart: refreshed from commit history on both surfaces (2026-10-20). Regenerated by cron on g3. Pushed because the ownership fingerprint moved f5eee9ffa8e39b71 -> 56a109cb9484f664, ...".

Ask, either of:

  1. Git convention: treat the first line of the message as the preview (the subject) and everything after the first blank line as the body. Cards show the subject; the changelog view shows the full text on expand.
  2. An explicit field: an optional --summary "<one line>" on repo push and pkg publish, stored with the version and shown in previews, falling back to the first line.

Option 1 needs no client change and matches how GitHub shows commits.

On our side, repo-ownership's refresh now writes a subject line that says what changed ("ownership: adom-tsci John→Ray; ..."), with details in the body. So it's ready for either option.

Option 1 is live on the wiki: previews now show a commit's subject, its first line (capped at 120 characters), with the full message in the hover tooltip and on the commit page. That covers the Files tab, a file's "last change" line and the commit list. The page log API (/api/pages/<owner>/<slug>/log) now returns subject next to message, so any client can show the short form.

One question: where did you see the "[updated] · 11 hours ago" card? I can't find it in the wiki's own pages, so I think it's in another client (Hydrogen's page list, the digest, or similar). If you can point me at it, that client can switch to subject.
