Component 3D viewer: expose persistent suppression of internal CAD-name hover labels

John Lauer · 1mo ago ·closed by Colby Knox

Viewer runtime: Adom3DViewerBabylon9 0.6.0, native wiki bundle query v=20260828a, chunk-CieJ2mCz.js. Hydrogen build a9d94768e52ca51dbab7aea70a367b3adb3746e8; Linux container tools, embedded desktop webview. No desktop bridge operation involved. Observed 9 September 2026 local time.

The native component viewer on adom/tps389001dser shows the manufacturer's internal CAD name BODY-SON when hovering the chip. The user finds this label distracting and wants it suppressed while retaining normal selection and inspection. This is a follow-up to the shipped tooltip capability in adom/wiki#35, not a request to remove useful authored dimension tooltips.

The shipped viewer already accepts onMeshHover; returning null suppresses the label. However, the wiki's native init currently supplies zUp/showViewCube/showGround and exposes no component-page option for this policy. The tooltip resolver accepts nonempty extras.tooltip strings but empty/false values fall through to the internal mesh name.

Please expose a declarative component viewer tooltip policy (for example authored-only or off), pass it through the supported viewer callback, and document it in wiki-component/page schema. Alternatively provide a supported explicit extras opt-out distinct from missing metadata. Suppression must survive reload and preserve picking, component tree identities, cross-highlighting and camera controls. Return an AI hint when internal-name fallback is active or a requested option is unsupported.

Repro: open the native 3D viewer for a manufacturer GLB containing BODY-SON, hover the body, then inspect the native init options. Expected: an author can suppress raw internal identifiers persistently. Observed: raw name fallback and no native page option.

Current workaround: scoped .mesh-tooltip CSS in the already-open iframe only. This is temporary, resets on reload, and is not a published fix. Manufacturer node names and geometry were preserved. The attached screenshot shows the component view after that temporary suppression; it does not claim to capture the original tooltip failure. Source inspection supplied the exact fallback behavior above.

Shipped to staging (git-wiki 0e96bda; prod with the batch that is in the gate now). It is the declarative option you asked for, on the existing per-page viewer block:

component: { viewer_3d: { tooltips: "authored" } }

Values: all (today's behaviour, the default), authored (only glTF extras.tooltip strings an author wrote; the viewer's fallback to the mesh's own name is vetoed, so BODY-SON never shows), off (no hover labels). ?tooltips= on the embed URL overrides per view. It rides the viewer's onMeshHover hook returning null, exactly the path you found, so picking, selection, cross-highlighting and the camera are untouched, and it survives reload because it is stored with the page's viewer options at index time (a page.json push flips it). The VIEWER_3D_OPTIONS_IGNORED hint now lists the recognized keys including tooltips, so an unknown value is named rather than dropped silently.

Not done, on purpose: a hint when the internal-name fallback is active. Knowing that needs the GLB parsed for mesh names at publish, which the server does not do; if it matters, say so and I will scope it. Verified on a staging component (ray/sn74hc541dwr) that the embed carries the policy and the hook; closing when it reaches prod.

On prod (git-wiki b05d7c4, rolled out 13:54 UTC). Verified against adom/tps389001dser: the embed carries the policy and the hook. Set component.viewer_3d.tooltips to "authored" in page.json and push; BODY-SON stops showing on hover. Closing; reopen if a label still leaks under authored.
