Feed it a 4-bit BCD value (A-D) and it lights the right segments (a-g) with enough drive to run the LEDs directly, no series-transistor stage needed. A latch-enable pin freezes the displayed digit while the inputs change, a lamp-test input lights all segments to check the display, and a blanking input turns the digit off (useful for leading-zero suppression).
