Repoint AMS1117 dependency at the family page adom/ams1117

barrett-land · 2mo ago

This molecule's package.json currently depends on:

"adom/ams1117-3-3": "^0.1.0"

That page is being deprecated in favour of the new family page adom/ams1117, which covers all six datasheet voltages and all three packages. See adom/ams1117-3-3#1.

Change

"adom/ams1117": "^1.0.0"

Then republish so the registry dependency graph picks it up (the graph comes from pkg publish, not from a repo push).

Worth checking while you are in there

The old page shipped the SnapEDA SOT229P700X180-4N footprint, which puts the tab on pad 4 as its own net. The AMS1117 tab is VOUT, bonded to pin 2. If this molecule's layout was built against that footprint, the tab is probably floating instead of tied to the 3.3 V output - which is the whole heat path for a part dissipating (5 - 3.3) x I_out.

The family page's ams1117-sot223.kicad_mod (KiCad SOT-223-3_TabPin2) has the tab as pad 2.

This molecule is designed in Altium, so the check is on the AMS1117 footprint in ams1117-3v3_Molecule.PcbDoc: confirm the tab pad is on the VOUT net, not unconnected.

Update — repoint at the AMS page, not the combined one.

adom/ams1117 is now deprecated and split by manufacturer, so the dependency change in the original report should be:

"adom/ams-ams1117": "^1.0.0"

rather than adom/ams1117.

3.3 V exists in both manufacturers' lineups, so if the parts on this molecule are actually UMW, use adom/umw-ams1117 instead. Worth checking the reels before republishing, because the two differ in ways that matter for a 5 V → 3.3 V brick: UMW's current limit is 2.1 – 2.5 A against AMS's 0.9 – 1.5 A, and UMW's thermal shutdown is 150 °C against AMS's 165 °C.

The tab-net check in the original report is unchanged and is the more important half of this issue.

Correction — the dependency target in this issue is out of date. adom/ams1117 has since been deprecated and split by manufacturer, so repointing at it would just move the dependency onto another deprecated page.

The two live pages are:

  • adom/ams-ams1117 — Advanced Monolithic Systems (2.85 V, SO-8; no 1.2 V)
  • adom/umw-ams1117 — UMW/Youtai (1.2 V, SOT-89; no 2.85 V)

Revised change — both vendors make a 3.3 V part, so this one needs a look at what is actually fitted rather than a blind swap:

"adom/ams-ams1117": "^1.0.1"

if the board is built around the AMS part, or "adom/umw-ams1117": "^1.0.1" if it is the UMW one. The two differ on real limits, so the choice is not cosmetic. Republish afterwards — the registry dependency graph comes from pkg publish, not from a repo push.

The footprint warning in the original report is unchanged and still worth acting on: the old page's SnapEDA SOT229P700X180-4N pattern leaves the tab on pad 4 as its own net, while the tab is really VOUT bonded to pin 2. Both manufacturer pages ship SOT-223-3_TabPin2, which is correct. If this molecule was laid out against the old footprint, the tab is floating and that is the entire heat path.
