library install: composite export -> adom-bridge staging -> kicad_install_library_bundle

Colby Knox · 1mo ago ·closed by Colby Knox

The optional follow-up from #38, split out so it is tracked: a composite verb that lands a Cloud Library cart inside desktop KiCad the way the web button does.

Chain: library export (done in 1.7.14) -> stage the bundle to the desktop via adom-bridge -> kicad_install_library_bundle (kicad-bridge 0.9.252, capture proof 0.9.253; documented in kicad_describe's catalog).

Why it is not in 1.7.14: the bridge lane cannot be verified from this container (no connected desktop KiCad), and the gotchas are exactly the kind that only live verification catches, already on record from the web lane:

  • send_files multi-file dest must not end in a dot-segment (.pretty parses as a file), and its arg is dest, not destDir (silently lands in Downloads)
  • ab /command caps bodies around 2.5MB, so bundles must stage via write_file_chunk
  • the bridge never closes a running KiCad: surface restartNeeded to the user, and capture proof is skipped while KiCad runs

Acceptance when picked up: run it against a real connected desktop, confirm the proof frame, and confirm a running KiCad reports restartNeeded rather than restarting. Ship in a regular release.

Shipped in adom-wiki 1.7.17 (5-platform gate, latest advanced), fully verified against a live connected desktop, which is what this issue was parked on.

adom-wiki library install [--target] [--library-name] [--format kicad] [--no-capture]: export (sha-verified via the shared export path) -> send_files staging to the desktop (%TEMP% expands server-side; a single file takes a full-path dest, so none of the dot-segment/destDir traps apply) -> kicad_install_library_bundle with capture proof. The bridge target auto-resolves when exactly one desktop is connected; a missing adom-bridge binary or zero targets errors cleanly with the manual fallback (library export + carry the bundle).

Acceptance, both branches live on Colby-ROG2 (KiCad 10.0, kicad-bridge 0.9.253):

  • KiCad closed: 1 symbol, 1 footprint, 1 3D model (refs rewritten), both lib tables registered, background Symbol Editor capture proof returned and the editor closed, no restart flag.
  • KiCad RUNNING: same install result, restartNeeded true, and the CLI's KICAD_RESTART_NEEDED warning states the user restarts it themselves; the bridge never touched the running instance. Window etiquette background throughout.

Hints: LIB_INSTALLED (counts + tables), KICAD_RESTART_NEEDED; docs/hint-codes.md and the bundled skill carry the chain and the never-close-KiCad rule. A container agent can now land a cart inside desktop KiCad exactly the way the web button does. Closing.
