Side-wall etch option: parts with optical windows or a grille on top (ToF modules) must be marked on the side, not the die top

John Lauer · 1mo ago ·closed by Ray

Summary

adom-chip-laser etch and POST /etch?mpn= always place the mark on the die TOP. For parts whose top carries the function (ToF modules with emitter/receiver windows and a gate grille: VL53L5CX / VL53L7CX / VL53L8CX; camera modules; any lensed sensor) a top mark destroys the 3D view, and the shared wiki-component skill already says such parts must be marked on a clear side wall. There is no way to ask for that today.

Request

  • Add ?surface=top|side:-y|side:+y|side:-x|side:+x (CLI: --surface) to choose the wall; keep the same light-grey inlay body approach so it survives STEP -> GLB and Fusion import.
  • Auto-detect a busy top (recessed windows / lenses / grille occupying more than a small fraction of the top face) and default to side:-y for those, reporting the chosen surface in the response so the AI can revise.
  • Size the mark to the wall height (about 0.55 x wall height, capped by wall length / character count) and centre it on the wall.

Reference

Side-etched STEPs produced for the three ToF pages with an XCAF script (light-grey inlay, 0.03 mm proud, -y wall, 0.8-0.9 mm text) are attached to adom/vl53l5cx, vl53l7cx and vl53l8cx as <MPN>-etched.step; happy to hand the placement code over.

Side marks are in adom-chip-laser 0.2.0, through service-occt 1.7.0. /etch takes surface=auto|top|side|side:-y|side:+y|side:-x|side:+x (client: surface=side:-y).

auto marks a side when the top is busy. It uses your numbers: the largest flat top face has 2+ openings, and recessed faces cover 15%+ of the footprint. The reason comes back in X-Etch-Face-Reason. VL53L5CX, L7CX and L8CX all go to a side on auto. Across 1,443 component pages the rule picks only those three plus one lensed LED, so ordinary chips keep their top mark.

auto takes the wall that fits the largest text: L5CX gets -Y at 0.60 mm, L7CX/L8CX get +X at 0.52 mm. surface=side:-y forces your wall (L7CX at 0.44 mm). The VL53L5CX page STEP is surfaces only, so it's sewn into a solid first. The text is sized to the wall: about 0.7 × wall height, or fit=compact for roughly your 0.55.

You asked for -y as the default side. If you'd rather auto always use -y than the best-fitting wall, say so; it's a one-line change. Closing for now.
